Places Near Dwarka Gujarat
Dwarka's location at the western tip of Saurashtra puts it within reach of some of Gujarat's and India's most remarkable destinations. Whether you are looking for another sacred pilgrimage site, a beautiful beach, a historical landmark, or a wildlife experience, the Dwarka region has extraordinary options within day-trip or overnight-trip distance.
Shivrajpur Beach
Gujarat's first and only Blue Flag certified beach, an international certification awarded to clean, safe and well-managed beaches. Shivrajpur offers pristine white sand, crystal-clear Arabian Sea water, lifeguard facilities and clean amenities. The beach is ideal for a sunrise visit or a morning break from the temple pilgrimage. The drive from Dwarka takes only about 20 minutes. The Blue Flag status means the beach meets strict environmental and safety standards, a rare and welcome feature on the Gujarat coast.
Nageshwar Jyotirlinga
One of the 12 sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, located on the Dwarka to Okha highway. The temple features a spectacular 25-metre Shiva statue and is an essential part of the Dwarka pilgrimage circuit. Most devotees visit Nageshwar on the same day as Bet Dwarka, making it a full and fulfilling day of sacred site visits. Read the complete Nageshwar guide →
Okha Port
The fishing port of Okha is the embarkation point for the Bet Dwarka ferry and is worth a brief exploration in its own right. The Okha waterfront offers excellent views of the Gulf of Kutch, colourful fishing boats at anchor, and a lively early-morning fish market. The port town has a raw, working maritime character that contrasts interestingly with the sacred atmosphere of Dwarka city.
Dwarka Lighthouse
The Dwarka Lighthouse is a beautifully preserved old lighthouse standing at the southern tip of Dwarka city. The lighthouse offers a magnificent 360-degree panoramic view of the city, the Arabian Sea, the Gomti River, and the Dwarkadhish Temple spire from its upper observation platform. The climb to the top involves a spiral staircase and rewards visitors with one of the finest elevated views available anywhere in Dwarka. A small entry fee is charged. Best visited in the morning or evening golden hour.
Porbandar
Porbandar is a historically and spiritually significant city approximately 100 kilometres from Dwarka along the coastal highway. It is best known as the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi, India's father of the nation, and the Kirti Mandir museum at Gandhi's birthplace is an educationally rich experience. Porbandar also has a beautiful and important Sudama Temple dedicated to Krishna's devoted friend, and a lovely seafront promenade. The round trip makes for an excellent full-day cultural and spiritual excursion from Dwarka.
Jamnagar
Jamnagar is the largest city near Dwarka and a fascinating destination in its own right. Known as the "Jewel of Kathiawar," the city is famous for its Bandhani (tie-dye) textiles and lacquerwork. Key attractions include the Lakhota Palace (a fort-museum on a lake island), Balachadi Beach, the Ranjit Sagar Dam, and the famous old walled city with its circular plan. Jamnagar is also the location of Govardhan Math, one of the four Mathas established by Adi Shankaracharya.
Somnath Temple
Somnath Temple, the first and most celebrated of the 12 Jyotirlingas, is one of the most sacred and historically significant temples in all of India. Located on the Arabian Sea coast at Prabhas Patan in the Gir Somnath district, the recently reconstructed white marble temple is a magnificent sight. The "Sound and Light Show" at Somnath in the evenings narrates the temple's history of repeated destruction and reconstruction, making it one of Gujarat's most compelling heritage experiences. Somnath is best done as an overnight trip from Dwarka.
Gir National Park
Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary is the last natural habitat of the Asiatic lion in the world and one of India's most remarkable wildlife conservation success stories. Located approximately 240 kilometres from Dwarka, the park offers jeep safaris through the dry deciduous forest where you can spot the majestic Asiatic lion alongside leopards, hyenas, crocodiles and over 300 species of birds. Safari permits are strictly limited and must be booked in advance through the Gujarat Forest Department's online portal. Best done as a 2-day trip from Dwarka.
